Halee Tisler: The Puzzle-Solving Organizer with a Passion for Inclusivity
Halee Tisler is a Computer Science student at Oakland University (Class of ’25) whose journey into coding was a delightful discovery of her lifelong love for puzzles and problem-solving. Initially an undecided engineering major, Halee found her "just right" moment in a C# coding class where every correctly executed line of code and conquered loops brought immense excitement, reminiscent of solving Sudoku. This epiphany led her confidently to declare her major in Computer Science. Her first taste of a hackathon was an internal company event during her internship, an intimidating yet incredibly valuable experience that not only saw her team win 1st place but also introduced her to the broader hackathon community through her supportive mentor.
As a hacker, Halee's path has been one of significant growth and self-discovery. Her first college hackathon, SpartaHack, was a tough learning experience, revealing gaps in her project-building experience and bringing on a wave of imposter syndrome. However, she turned this challenge into a "wake-up call," dedicating the next year to mastering fundamentals. This perseverance paid off spectacularly at HackDearborn Fall 2024, where her team clinched 1st place overall, a moment that cemented her confidence and passion for software development. Beyond participating, Halee has poured her heart into organizing GrizzHacks, serving as logistics lead and then president, where her proudest moments come from seeing the electric energy of participants demonstrating their innovative projects.
Halee stands out for her relatability to beginners and her immense passion for creating welcoming and inclusive event experiences. As GrizzHacks president, her top priority was ensuring participants felt seen and supported, meticulously planning to meet diverse dietary needs and cultural observances like Ramadan. Her favorite memories include handing out 600 miniature ducks at GrizzHacks 6, forming lasting friendships, and the sheer joy of seeing winning teams celebrate at GrizzHacks 7. TypeScript is her preferred language, and GitHub is her go-to tool. A former childhood chess competitor, Halee now enjoys board games and is a testament to the fact that it's the journey, growth, and connections that truly define a hacker.
