Afonne CID: The Resilient OpenStack Core Reviewer and MLH Mentor
Afonne CID is a dedicated MLH Fellow and Open Source Contributor from a remote village in Nigeria, whose journey into tech reflects his resilience and self-motivation. He tinkered with code on Mavis Beacon software even before owning a personal computer. Later, he wrote Python automation scripts and Forex trading bots while working at a computer center, learning from YouTube tutorials. In May 2021, he joined the African Leadership Experience Software Engineering program (ALX SE). There, he discovered the MLH Fellowship through social media. After an initial application rejection, he was eventually accepted into the Spring 2024 cohort.
The MLH Fellowship connected Afonne with mentors and a global community, opening new doors in his career trajectory. His contributions to OpenStack Ironic during the fellowship led to his hiring as a contract employee by G-Research on their Open Source Software team. Since his time at MLH, he has become a Core Reviewer for OpenStack Ironic, where he triages bugs, resolves issues, adds new features, and reviews contributions from others. Now, as an MLH mentor for the Spring 2025 cohort, he is dedicated to giving back to the program that opened so many doors for him.
Python is Afonne's language of choice. He humorously lists tools like YouTube, his phone, laptop, and internet as indispensable tools. His story is a powerful example of "grass-to-grace," highlighting how dedication and community support can lead to incredible achievements. Making his first meaningful open-source contribution that got merged is one of his most memorable experiences. When not immersed in OpenStack, Afonne enjoys playing chess and going to the gym. He hopes to one day learn guitar and travel the world.
